Who we are
RoadCrew is a mobile app for people who drive together: plan a group cruise, see your crew on one live map, and talk with push-to-talk. RoadCrew is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This policy explains what information the RoadCrew app and website collect, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have. Questions? Email info@roadcrewapp.ca.
Information we collect
Account. Your email address. If you continue with Apple or Google, we receive that account's identifier, the email address it shares (with Apple's Hide My Email, a private relay address), and your name if you choose to share it the first time. RoadCrew has no passwords, and we never see your Apple or Google password. If you continue with email, we send you a 6-digit code to confirm the address is yours.
Profile. A username we generate for you, and the display name, city, province or state, bio and profile photo you add.
Vehicles. The make, model, year, color, nickname and photos of vehicles you add to your garage.
Crews and cruises. Friends and friend requests, people you block, groups, cruise invitations, the cruises you create or join (name, description, time, destination and who is in it), direct messages you send, and in-app notifications.
Location — only during an active cruise. With your permission, the app shares your device's precise location in real time with the other members of the cruise you are in — including while RoadCrew is in the background, if you allow that, so your crew can still see you when you switch apps. Live positions are kept in our server's memory only while the cruise is active and are not written to our database; they are cleared when you leave or the cruise ends. To show driving directions, your current position and the cruise destination are sent to Google's routing service.
Voice. When you hold push-to-talk during a cruise, your audio is streamed live to the other members of that cruise. It is not recorded or stored.
Photos and camera. Only the photos you choose or take for your profile and vehicles.
Technical information. Sign-in session records (stored only in hashed form), and IP addresses and request details in server logs, used to keep the service running and to prevent abuse. Sign-in codes are stored only as a keyed hash and deleted within a day.
How we use it
- To provide RoadCrew: your account and profile, friends, groups, messages, cruises, the live map and push-to-talk.
- To sign you in and keep your account secure, including limiting repeated attempts and preventing abuse.
- To send the emails you ask for, such as sign-in codes.
- To respond when you contact us, and to meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not show ads, and the app contains no third-party advertising or analytics trackers.
What other people can see
- Other RoadCrew users can see your username, display name, profile photo, city and province or state, and bio.
- Your email address is never shown to other users.
- Members of a cruise you join see your live location and the vehicle you bring, and hear your push-to-talk audio, during that cruise.
- Messages are visible to the people in that conversation.
Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run RoadCrew. They process information only to provide their service to us:
- Railway — hosting for our servers, database and uploaded photos.
- LiveKit — real-time delivery of push-to-talk audio.
- Resend — delivery of sign-in code emails.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, maps on iOS, and notification delivery on iPhone.
- Google — Sign in with Google, driving routes, and maps and notification delivery on Android.
- Expo — app delivery and notification infrastructure.
These providers, and therefore your information, may be located outside Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject to local law.
How long we keep it
- Account, profile, vehicle, crew, cruise and message information: until you delete your account.
- Live location: only while the cruise is active.
- Push-to-talk audio: not kept.
- Sign-in codes: deleted within a day. Sign-in sessions end when you log out, or after 90 days without using the app.
- After you delete your account, we delete your personal information within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep it.
Your choices and rights
- You can see and edit your profile and vehicles in the app at any time.
- You can ask us to delete your account and its data by emailing info@roadcrewapp.ca from the address on your account (for a Sign in with Apple account that doesn't share an email, include your RoadCrew username).
- You can ask for a copy of your personal information, or to correct it, the same way.
- You can turn off location, microphone, camera, photo and notification access in your device settings. Without location access, you can't share your position during a cruise; without the microphone, you can listen but not talk.
- You can stop using Sign in with Apple for RoadCrew in your Apple ID settings, and remove RoadCrew's access in your Google Account settings.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in British Columbia, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit, sign-in codes and session tokens are stored only in hashed form, and the app keeps its sign-in tokens in your device's secure storage. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and limit who can access it.
Children
RoadCrew is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date above. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will let you know in the app before it takes effect.
